Meet Mara, our new Lead Fashion Designer

Posted on 19 June 2018

As we started diving into design for Fall/Winter 2018, Huaywasi was lucky enough to find Mara, a born-and-raised Limeña with a fierce work ethic and a love for all things fashion! Learn more about her below!

Can you tell us a little about your background in fashion?

I loved fashion since I was a child, but my parents initially disapproved of it as a career because they wanted me to study a more technical subject in school. Still, I finished my degree in Fashion Design at Senati in 2015 and have been working for various clothing companies ever since.

I also do freelance design work for a company who sells heavy knitwear to Europeans. My focuses are sweaters and dresses and I love mixing the colors of the yarn because I don’t believe knitted clothes have to be boring!

Any interesting fashion successes?

Last year, I won a fashion competition focused on creatively incorporating zippers into clothing. I made a really cool jacket with sleeves composed entirely of zippers! My parents are now very proud of the success I’ve had thus far throughout my career.

Tell us your thoughts on fair trade.

I previously worked for a fair trade company specializing in Alpaca, a Peruvian fiber which I love, so fair trade is not new to me. I believe that when clothing is well constructed, you have to reward people properly for the work they put in. Well-made clothing takes technique and time!!

What is your favorite Huaywasi Spring/Summer 2018 product and what Fall/Winter 2018 product are you most excited for?

I love the Alpaca Brown & Dusty ornaments collection by Herminia because the pattern is so unique! And I am most excited for Yeni Chalina scarf made by Nélida because of its super-soft Alpaca wool blend!

We have to ask, what’s your favorite Peruvian dish!?

My husband is from Trujillo (a northern Peruvian city rich in culture and gastronomy) and he makes me the most delicious meal combining ceviche and chicharrón (a dish generally consisting of fried pork belly).

Any hobbies outside of fashion?

I love to run and, of course, play soccer!!

Anything else you want us know!?

Huaywasi has been such a unique and positive experience where I feel my creativity is accepted and encouraged, and I cannot wait to show everyone the results of our new collections!
